Ever since my debut poetry and prose book, YOU AGAIN, came out last October (almost one year! Time flies!), I’ve gotten so many questions about it. What inspired it? Who are the poems about? When did you write them? They were questions I loved receiving because I wanted nothing more than to talk about it. The fact that others cared enough to even ask meant the world to me.
One of my favorite things about studying my favorite writers is learning about what inspired their words. From nonfiction to poetry, I find it fascinating to discover where these pieces and stories began. I love learning about the seeds that blossomed into something more. When pondering how I wanted to continue sharing YOU AGAIN this year, I thought it would be fun to not just post my work, but share where it came from. Introducing my newest series, Afterwords.
Every other week, I’ll share one poem and what inspired it, what I was going through when I wrote it, and more. Consider this a glimpse not only into my writing process, but also into my creative thoughts, personal life, and how I turn my experiences into poetry. I hope that it will offer more insight into each piece, help connect the dots in YOU AGAIN, and inspire you to turn your personal experiences into poetry, too.
