Come On, Aunty, Dance!

Tonight, while my mother and I were watching American Idol, my 2-year-old niece Melanie started to dance. I had an awful, long day, so I just sat there on the couch all pouty and miserable, a million angry thoughts floating around my head. Then, Mel, with the biggest smile on her face—all gapped teeth and pink gums—hopped on over to me and shouted, “Come on, Aunty, dance!” as clear as day. My mom and I were shocked for a moment as we realized she pieced these words together—this bossy and confident order to cheer me up—so I couldn’t help but dance in my seat and clap my hands to the music, and somehow, triumphantly, her smile got even bigger.

It is the first full sentence she ever said to me.
