I think it’s safe to say everyone loves a fresh start. For as long as I can remember, September has always been that for me–maybe even more than New Year’s. It must have something to do with the start of a new school year. For ages, I associated the end of summer with new beginnings: crisp notebooks waiting to be filled, new stationery and supplies, and a replenished attitude. Another 10 months of classes? Bring it on!

Even though I’ve been out of school for years now, my body still goes through this transition like muscle memory. And it’s a welcome feeling.

It’s true: everyone loves a fresh start. A chance to do something over, a new routine, or a change of scenery. One can only hope this new perspective can linger past the first couple weeks and stretch through the rest of the year. Fall has always been my favorite season and with it comes a state of mind and vibe that truly makes me flourish.

September just has a special charm.

It’s not that I just love indoor activities more than outdoor ones. Or the fact that jackets and layering accessories make my heart pump. It isn’t even the fact that so many video games I’ve been looking forward to are now releasing one after the other (okay, maybe this has something to do with it!). It’s more about me feeling happy and comfortable in my mind–and as you can see, skin–again.

Most people do not know this, but I’ve struggled with a lot of things this year. It wasn’t until recently that I started to feel like myself and love myself again. A few people helped with me that, but mostly, it was something I had to pull out of myself. A hundred people could tell you how amazing you are, how smart you are, and how beautiful you are, but you won’t hear them unless you believe it, too.

Now, I’m back to taking care of myself, setting aside time just for me, and treating myself to things I love. I’m back to feeling creative and excited about what the future could bring me. And I’m back to letting love and kind words in because for a while there, I wasn’t listening.

September, here’s to better things.
