- From cozy sweaters and must-have layers to statement bottoms and convertible bags, here's everything in my closet that I'm currently loving for fall.
Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of writing for my job in e-Commerce about “essentials.” At my workplace, we have a collection page of our own: must-have sweaters, polos, and other timeless staples. Now, I was inspired to take a closer look at my closet and gather some of my own fall wardrobe essentials. And let me tell you: this season is my favorite for a reason.
From cozy sweaters to go-with-anything boots, fall fashion has always seemed to match my personality the most. I love cozy layers, autumnal colors, and waffle-knit-anything. With that said, here’s what I’ll be living in all season long.
The striped sweater.
Stripes are easily a seasonless staple, but for fall, I love to go with an updated double-stripe pattern. Higher than a crewneck but shorter than a turtleneck, a mockneck completes this style and truly gives you the best of both worlds.
The colorblock sweater.
If you aren’t big on horizontal stripes, you can still embrace the multi-stripe look with a colorblock style. This one from Madewell combines fall’s cozy waffle-stitch with mens-inspired pastels.
The puff sleeve dress.
Puff sleeves are IN this year (as are ruffles!), and this mini wrap dress checks all of autumn’s boxes. Of course, its mossy green color is the perfect fall shade. Plus, it is light enough to layer under your favorite cardigan—if you need to.
The sweater dress.
It goes without saying that a relaxed-fit sweater dress, especially in current global-pandemic times, is essential. This style is polished enough to look like you put some thought into your outfit and cozy enough to double as the perfect binge-watching companion at home.
A menswear-inspired blazer.
No list of fall wardrobe essentials is complete without the perfect plaid blazer. Over the years, I’ve had several, but this boyfriend-borrowed style is my absolute favorite. It’s warm enough to keep you toasty on the coldest days and easy enough to quickly layer over a white or brown t-shirt. I also wore it here with just a strapless bra!
A cozy, oversized cardigan.
Of course, it isn’t autumn without a long, cozy cardigan. This year, I’m partial to oatmeal hues, and I’ve got to have big statement buttons on mine—or else it won’t do. This one from the Gap checks all my boxes.
When I get tired of wearing my business-friendly high-rise jeans, I opt for this drapey paperbag pair. It’s navy, so it’s that much more interesting than black (haha), so comfortable, and pairs nicely with ankle boots or loafers.
If you’ve worked with me at all in an office setting in the past four years, this item won’t come as any surprise. A brown faux-leather skirt is my ultimate fall go-to. I love pairing mine with tight-fitting black turtlenecks, slouchy sweaters, and sheer stockings. Of course, this particular one had me at “crocodile.”
Essential Ankle Boots
The Chelsea boot.
Is it really fall without a Chelsea boot? Not if you ask me. This sleek, camel-colored Regan boot from Madewell goes with pretty much anything. Subsequently, the 2.5” heel puts me at almost 5’11” which just might be my favorite part.
The lace-up boot.
My other favorite fall boot, second to Chelsea, is the lace-up boot. I have a pair in navy suede that always turns heads, but this black pair will also do the trick. I like to keep this heel on the smaller side, so I can stomp around town with ease.
The crossbody bag.
My favorite “little” bag at the moment is Lo & Son’s Waverley 2 bag. It’s convertible, so you can wear it as a crossbody, a shoulder bag, or a belt bag. Big enough to fit all your essentials but small enough not to get in your way, this little bag is my newest buddy.
The tote bag.
Finally, Madewell’s Transport tote bag is a favorite among my commuter friends and professional circle. Its smooth, supple leather ages beautifully and looks great with any outfit. Plus, the roomy inner pocket is spacious enough to carry all your essentials.
What are some of your fall wardrobe essentials? I’d love to know!
